Helen Wilcock enjoys dinner with an alpine edge at The White Haus in Farrington
Are you looking to escape the winter blues without leaving London? Head to The White Haus in Farringdon and be transported to the slopes as you enjoy all-day dining with an intriguing menu.
Comfortingly familiar dishes with a European twist, beautiful rustic decor and vintage cable car seating – here’s what I discovered upon taking it for a taste drive.
The Venue
Bringing alpine to the city The White Haus makes you feel comfortable as soon as you step through the door.
The interiors are seperated into the main bar area downstairs and casual dining upstairs, which also has its own small so no need to worry about going up and down for drinks!
We sat in what was definitely the best seat in the house, a converted vintage ski lift featuring a folding table to help you get in and out easily. While you can only fit two people in comfortably it added some great theatre to the evening.
The Food & Drink
Our lovely waiter insisted that we tried the ham hock and taleggio cheese croquettes and after the first bite we understood why. Golden and crispy on the outside with a soft centre overflowing with delicious filling, the perfect dish to warm your soul this winter.
We were told that the chicken schnitzel was very popular but decided to go against the crowd and enjoyed the ribeye steak with a parsley, onion and caper salad and the roast cod with puy lentils.
Both were hearty portions and their delicious aromas meant we dived straight in. The steak was pink and the cod flaked apart, they were cooked perfectly. The cod had a wonderful citrus flavour from the salsa verde and the lentils had a great texture to them.
Unable to resist dessert we devoured the tarte aux mayrtilles and hot chocolate mousse with vanilla ice cream . The tarte was sweet and fruity, we loved the sprinkling of chocolate nibs over the dish it was a lovely little added extra.
The mousse an absolute delight! Little insider tip, make a hole in the middle and add some of the ice cream it helps to balance out the richness and creates a hot/cold sensation.
The Wordrobe Verdict
The White Haus has a menu that is guaranteed to satisfy everyone’s cravings. You can even be a romantic and share their delicious fondue, which will only further transport you to the snow-topped slopes.
If you are unsure which dish to choose then the knowledgeable staff will guide you in the right direction but you will be sure to return for the other dishes you really want to try.
