Hotel Review: Thornbury Castle, Gloucestershire

A Relais & Chateau property dating back to the Tudor times, the 26-room Thornbury Castle near Bristol provides its guests with an eloquent staycation set in authentically historic surroundings. Both gourmands and gluttons for luxury will adore turning a key at this 16th century property, says editor Sophie Ritchie

Hotels brimming with character from tip to toe will always have an incomparable allure, especially when choosing a UK-based getaway. The history-steeped Thornbury Castle certainly falls into this category with its sandy stone walls and 15-acres of surrounding land, welcoming each guest to a world of refined Tudor luxury from the moment they drive towards the entrance.

Built during King Henry VIII’s reign by Edward Stafford to inspire and impress all those who came across its impressive facade, it’s still as easy on the eyes today, A unique 26-room castle hotel filled with opulence, gastronomic flair and unique Tudor features, staycations here feel like a walking history lesson.

Stafford didn’t last too long as its owner – King Henry VIII took speedy control of the castle after its original constructor fell victim to the King’s jealous streak and was executed for treason. The property, built to stand as a display of immense power and wealth (undeniably Stafford’s downfall) then passed through the hands of Henry’s children, Edward VI and Queen Mary Tudor (Mary I).

Fast forward a few years and you’ll now find it operating as a luxurious four-star boutique hotel that pays homage to its past with regular Tudor-inspired events and various guest offerings – ranging from costumes and falconry through to picturesque horse carriage rides (although the latter will set you back a pretty penny).

The Room

Each of the 26 carefully-restored bedchambers here are a feast for the senses. We stay in the Anne of Cleeves room, a vast and lavish Superior Deluxe room that makes its occupants feel like they’ve stepped into their very own period drama.

Found in a separate building to the original castle, the abode’s charm is conjured by the immense detail that’s been draped over the space. Deep red carpets etched with regal gold patterns, comfortable colour-coordinating furnishings for at least seven people to sit and the jewel of the room, a large bed kitted out with a gold headboard that awaits centre stage.

A myriad of furnishings complete the enchantment – tall lamps, red poofs, paintings to ponder over and elegant wallpaper all create the enchanting experience that could leave a history buff drooling at the mouth.

Despite Anne of Cleeves being the infamously ugly wife whom Henry VIII never fancied, it’s hard to find anything about this room that I don’t find aesthetically pleasing. Narrow windows with original arrow slits add to the castle’s historic nature, as do the heavy wooden doors that lead between various rooms and of course, there’s the property’s grey stone exterior to admire as I drift around the grounds during my morning run’s cool down.

It’s not all about the past, of course – guests can also enjoy various mod cons in the form of USB switches, light switch panels, mini fridges and coffee and tea making facilities – as well as a small complimentary bottle of sloe gin to get into the Tudor spirit (quite literally).

Pushing open one door reveals a corner wardrobe space with an ultra archaic feel, whilst the other reveals an expansive modern bathroom complete with powerful rainfall shower, White Company toiletries and a glass-doored toilet (the epitome of present-day romance).

The Food

Much like the most famous Tudor king’s own personal interests, gastronomy is a large part of the experience at Thornbury Castle. Book a table at dinnertime to enjoy fine dining plates in the form of a 6-course tasting menu or A la Carte selection at the intimate 3AA restaurant, where historic artwork, velvety red upholstery and open fireplaces set the scene for an opulent few hours. Portions are dainty but delicious, featuring seasonal delights in the form of Chalk Stream Trout, Burrata, Lamb shoulder and other beautifully-presented creations.

The Wordrobe Verdict

Thornbury Castle is full of intriguing personality and a uniquely archaic atmosphere, a combination that modern hotels and their swipeable plastic key cards simply can’t compete with. If you’re a fan of memorable staycations that leave a lasting impression, pull up to these stone walls and let the historic hedonism begin.
