Borgo Pignano Florence Opens Following Extensive Restoration

Borgo Pignano Florence has officially opened its prestigious doors, bringing the spirit of a Tuscan country estate to the city with 32 individually designed rooms and suites set within five acres of historic gardens in Florence

Italian getaways are calling. Sister property to the renowned Borgo Pignano Volterra in Tuscany, the 15th-century villa has been meticulously restored to offer a refined retreat that blends heritage, sustainability and immersive cultural experiences and is now welcoming guests.

Located on the northern slopes of Montughi Hill, one of Florence’s most prestigious and tranquil areas, the estate provides a peaceful escape just moments from the city’s cultural heart.

Part of Relais & Châteaux, Borgo Pignano Florence is the brainchild of Sir Michael Moritz KBE, owner of the award-winning Borgo Pignano Volterra, a luxury eco-conscious retreat set on a 750-acre estate in the heart of Tuscany near Volterra.

The Estate

Set within five acres of grounds, the largest of any hotel in Florence, the estate comprises 11 historic buildings and 32 rooms and suites. Accommodation ranges from Charming Rooms (25–27 sqm) to expansive Signature Suites (80 sqm), each one individually designed with bespoke furnishings, Venetian fabrics and marble bathrooms, offering views of the manicured gardens and surrounding Tuscan hills.

Villa La Sosta

Positioned at the entrance to the estate, Villa La Sosta is a private 385 sqm residence with five en-suite bedrooms, a secluded plunge pool and a formal Italian garden. Ideal for families or small groups, the villa combines exclusivity with full access to the wider hotel facilities.

The Location

Situated on the Northern slopes of the Montughi hill, the villa enjoys an elevated position that brings cooler summer evenings and far-reaching views. The area has long served as a gateway to Florence, rich in history and home to landmarks such as the Church of the Pilgrim and Villa del Pellegrino. Borgo Pignano Florence is just 1km from historical landmarks such as Piazza della Libertà.

The History

The main villa dates back to the 15th century and has passed through several notable owners, including the Ginori-Lisci family, General Negri, and later American engineer Alfred Parrish. More recently, it was owned by Count Lorenzo Emo Capodilista. The property is now owned by Sir Michael Moritz KBE and his wife and follows the same operating philosophy as Borgo Pignano in Tuscany, with a focus on low-impact hospitality.

The Design

The restoration has been led by British designer Guy Oliver, known for his work on hotels as well as high-profile private estates (including 10 Downing Street, the Connaught and Claridge’s) and historic properties across Europe, including extensive projects for international private clients and the original Borgo Pignano in Tuscany. His approach combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary detailing, with an emphasis on natural materials, local sourcing, and architectural integrity rather than decorative styling. Guy Oliver was joined by Holly Hulburd who designed all rooms and suites.

The Gardens

The unique gardens unfold across five acres of restored Tuscan hillside, moving from villa to formal gardens, through olive terraces and into woodland. The design reinstates classic spatial rhythms such as cypress avenues, stone piazzas, pergolas and parterres, with layered planting including roses, wisteria, peonies, hydrangeas and seasonal bulbs. The garden will also include an intimate Italianate space with reconstructed stone detailing, clipped forms, a central basin and structured planting including peonies and evergreen hedging.

Dining

Borgo Pignano Florence will feature two restaurants and two bars, offering a variety of refined yet relaxed settings, from elegant indoor spaces to panoramic terraces and a laid-back poolside lounge. Under the direction of Chef Stefano Cavallini, the culinary offering will be rooted in Tuscan tradition and shaped by organic produce from the Borgo Pignano estate in Tuscany, where the chef holds a Michelin Green Star.

Guests can expect all-day à la carte dining, seasonal small plates and signature cocktails, with each venue reflecting the property’s commitment to quality and sustainability.

Wellbeing

Wellbeing is woven throughout the guest experience. Facilities include a 30-metre heated outdoor pool (making it one of the largest in Florence), spa, fitness area, solarium deck and a peaceful jogging path. The expansive grounds offer natural beauty and privacy at every turn.

Cultural Experiences

Borgo Pignano Florence places culture at the centre of its vision. Guests can enjoy private access to leading galleries, bespoke historical tours and artist residencies, as well as curated experiences such as wine and olive oil tastings, cocktail masterclasses and farm-to-table cooking lessons. Guests are also invited to visit Borgo Pignano Florence’s sister property to experience authentic rural experiences from wine tastings to beekeeping.

Sustainability

Reflecting the philosophy of its sister property, Borgo Pignano Florence has been designed with care for both people and planet. Eco-conscious practices include the use of sustainable materials, energy-efficient systems and locally sourced organic goods, all contributing to a considered and responsible guest experience.
