Some destinations have the kind of luxury no amount of high-end shopping and dining can replace. They have systems and cultures that make female travellers feel comfortable exploring the cities alone and generally have less violent crime in public spaces.
How I Chose the Cities
I picked out the 5 best cities to explore alone, knowing that they are less likely to stress you out and turn your vacation into a draining instead of rejuvenating experience. I listed them in no particular order, and based the list on studies, my own travels, and other women’s stories.
We also took the time to research mobility in these cities, including how well the people follow rules, violent crime rates, gender equality, walkability, and the public legal system.
Compared to the US, where you need more support to get legal help after a rideshare sexual assault, as there are fewer regulations, most of these cities are in countries with a high level of protection for women.
1) Copenhagen, Denmark

Experiences
Copenhagen’s luxuriousness is not loud, but the real, understated, and balanced mix of royal and modern aesthetics. It’s got Scandinavian coolness in more ways than one, including its castles, canals, and some of the best dining you’ll find.
It gives you quiet, reflective canal walks, harmonious architecture, and cozy bistros that let you feel both indulgent and grounded.
Transport in the City
Copenhagen lets you move around safely, quickly, and with confidence that you are in a city and country that protects its people. The metro runs 24/7, the city is generally walkable, and it’s exceptionally well built for cyclists. If you prefer going around on a bike, which is a fun, cheap, and safe option, Copenhagen provides amazing infrastructure, even if it is a bit chilly. Also, you can get a fully-licensed, GPS-tracked taxi only in Denmark, as Uber is banned.
Safety
Denmark is not only one of the safest, most gender-equal countries, but it’s also the second happiest in the world. Copenhagen has low crime rates and high public trust.
2) Helsinki, Finland

Experiences
We are still in the North of Europe and in a city that lets you enjoy your solitude in peace. In Helsinki, you can experience Finnish saunas, walk around the green Seurasaari Island, eat in Michelin-starred restaurants like Palace, and drink tonnes of coffee. It’s one of the world’s cleanest cities and officially the greenest city. And yes, Finland is the happiest country in the world.
Transport in the City
If you want a walkable city, Helsinki is your vacation spot. It is not only safe, it feels safe, so you can actually enjoy it. A lot of people speak English and generally just mind their own business, the public transport is covered with cameras and security personnel, and there are night bus services. Helsinki offers taxis, buses, trams, and a metro system.
Safety
Finland and its capital are well known as a popular choice for first-time female solo travelers. It’s another safe country with high gender equality. Staying away from darker suburban stations at night is a general tip, but the city is generally one of the safest.
3) Singapore

Experiences
Singapore is known for its dining scene, futuristic shine, and strict rules. The nightlife is not very exciting, but you can enjoy the Gardens by the Bay, a mindblowing botanic garden with supertrees, world-famous cocktails, lightshows, skyscrapers, beaches, treetop walks, and a contrast of the super-modern and historic districts.
Transport in the City
Singapore is known for its orderliness, which you can also see in how its transport is organized. While it does have a ridesharing app, the app is heavily regulated, government-licensed, and monitored in real time. The MRT system is also very safe and heavily monitored.
Safety
Violent crime is extremely low, and it’s one of the safest places to be at night. Sure it’s always good to stay aware of your surroundings, but Singapore is one of the places you don’t have to worry about so much, and solo travelers can see amazing landscapes, animals, and plants.
