The Hotel Hot Seat: University Arms, Cambridge

Meet Cambridge’s coolest new hotel.

This week, The Wordrobe shares why The University Arms in Cambridge is ideal for a summer stay with style

Thanks to burgeoning high-tech industries, Cambridge has been transformed in recent years to become the UK’s third wealthiest city – with a Shoreditch-cool culinary scene to match. Whilst the hungry hipsters have been satisfied, up until now it’s lacked an equally cool, A-list place to stay – but that’s all about to change.

Meet the University Arms, Cambridge. Following a two-year, £80m renovation, it’s set to be the style seeker’s next hotel of choice. The work of dream team John Simpson, the UK’s pre-eminent classical architect, and Martin Brudnizki, the world’s most in-demand designer, this hotel will offer everything from character to culinary heaven.

The design

Opening this August, expect next-gen public spaces, creatively balancing sociability and privacy, and bedrooms that combine Simpson’s gravitas with Brudnizki’s glamour.

The hotel, overlooking Parker’s Piece, will be quintessentially English and the literary and academic spirit of Cambridge will be one of its defining characteristics.

The hotel’s will also pay homage to this. Curated by Heywood Hill – one of the leading bookshops of London, the space will be a place to escape and relax whilst exploring books from renowned authors.

The rooms

The food

The destination restaurant and bar, Parker’s Tavern, will be inspired by the communal dining halls synonymous with Cambridge Colleges.

Head chef Tristan Welch has designed every dish to be a whimsical re-imagining of a British classic, sourced from field, fen and England’s seas.
