Historic hospitality businesses including Scoma’s, The Westin St. Francis, Buena Vista, and Tonga Room, have joined forces with San Francisco Travel and Market Street Railway to commemorate the momentous 150th anniversary of San Francisco’s legendary cable cars with a dreamy competition.
From August 2 through to October 31, 2023, these venues will celebrate the magic of San Francisco and the anniversary of the city’s iconic cable cars with a special contest.
“San Francisco’s iconic cable cars are a living testament to the resilience and innovation that define our City by the Bay. A cherished symbol of San Francisco, cable cars allow visitors and residents to explore our beloved vistas and venues just as millions have done over the last 150 years,” said San Francisco Travel Association President & CEO Joe D’Alessandro.
“No other city in the world has street running cable cars. San Francisco was the first city with cable cars, and since 1957, we’ve been the only city to run them,” said Rick Laubscher, President of Market Street Railway.
“Our special 150th anniversary website, sfcablecars.org, is filled with cable car history and little-known stories. I cannot wait to join the group for the Cable Car Crawl and visit my favorite San Francisco legacy venues! It’s a great time to rediscover San Francisco and the cable cars.”

How: This is a non-ticketed event; reservations may be required for some participating businesses. Residents and visitors can take advantage of an existing all-day, all-Muni pass for $13 to hop on and off cable cars. From July 1 to the end of 2023, a special $5 all-day pass will let riders hop on and hop off the California cable car line as well, to encourage exploration of neighborhoods along the route.
