Review: Landal Twin Lakes, Lake District

Ideally located for a long weekend of UK adventuring, Landal Twin Lakes near Lancaster offers everything required when it comes to a few days of exploring, indulging and unwinding. With a prime position between the scenic Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, the picturesque Forest of Bowland and Morecambe Bay, this scenic resort and its lakeside lodges puts the stay in staycation. Sophie Ritchie shares more:

A UK break always requires two essential components for me. Beautiful scenery… and a dose of a luxury. Despite my best efforts, sleeping in anything tent or pod-shaped does not end well for the likes of this pampered, somewhat spoiled princess.

Thankfully, Landal Twin Lakes near Carnforth serves up both of those must-haves on a platter, providing ample opportunities for seeing some of the northern UK’s most beautiful highlights whilst providing guests with a spaciously contemporary space to unwind and switch off.

These modern lakeside lodges, found behind a gated entrance for added security, are dotted neatly around a large lake in symmetrical fashion. Offering options from a two person all the way up to an eight person lodge – this scenic accommodation is ideal for both smaller and larger groups. Whether it’s a romantic couples getaway you’re after or a full on family weekend with all the trimmings, there’s something for every party here.

Whether you’re in the mood to cook up a storm, enjoy the peace of separate bedrooms (sorry to my bestie, but after a week of traveling I couldn’t wait to sleep alone) or sink into the on-site bubbling hot tub, anything’s possible when it comes to relaxing within these wooden walls and the outdoor decking.

We’re lucky enough to stay in a ‘Tranquility 3′ Lodge, which offers not one but three bedrooms split across two storeys – along with triple bathrooms and a beautiful open kitchen meets living room space.

Flooded with natural light thanks to the large panoramic glass apex window, the sense of tranquility kicks in as soon as you start gazing across the water, where gentle ripples and the occasional sight of a resident’s paddle board can be spotted.

Clean, spacious and full of comfortable places to lounge, come nightfall the other adjacent lodges and their own worlds of relaxation can also be glimpsed in true nosy fashion due to a distinct lack of blinds or curtains in the main living areas.

However, unlike a hotel, where the mingling with other guests is unavoidable, the privacy of Landal Twin Lakes’ modern lodges allows a sense of isolated peace even when the resort is at maximum capacity.

There’s a duo of parking spaces directly outside, a code-based system for the main site entrance and following a speedy but thorough check-in, we’re left to our own devices by the friendly team – who give us a quick tour of the property when we first arrive and explain any need-to-knows. Introverted bliss – by the time dusk falls on our first night, I already know I’m smitten.

It’s worth noting that whilst there’s plenty of pans, plates and cutlery within the cupboards, you’ll need to source the majority of the supplies for a stay here, so it’s best to arrive prepared. If not, the local Carnforth supermarkets are just a ten-minute drive away with a small number of items also available in the on-site farm shop. And if you’re a coffee snob, pack your finest instant… this is a Nespresso-free zone.

Things to try

1 A hike at Ingleton Waterfalls Trail. About a half hour’s drive away awaits an enchanting uphill 7km trail of waterfalls and oak woodland scenery, filled with photo opportunities and even the occasional ice cream van. With rare and interesting plants and wildlife (plus its importance as a geological site) much of the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail has even been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest by Natural England. 2 Pick up supplies at Booths in Canforth: The north’s answer to Waitrose, Booths is a foodie’s dream filled with artisan goodies, produce and victuals galore. Pitstop here for luxuries to complete your staycation – after all, what’s a hot tub session if there’s not a glass (or cup in this case as glassware is forbidden) of something sparkling beside it? booths.co.uk/store/carnforth

3 Wetsuit the day away in Windermere: For water sport enthusiasts, an hour’s drive away awaits the iconic Lake Windermere in the Lake District, where paddling boarding, wild swimming and adventure sports such as canyoning or windsurfing can be found by the dozen.
