Intertwining fascinating history with regal design, impeccable service and classical interiors, there are few places better for an authentic Italian getaway than NH Collection Firenze Porta Rossa in Florence, a five-star hotel as romantic as the city itself. Sophie Ritchie shares more:
Located just a short stroll away from the city’s iconic Ponte Vecchio bridge, NH Collection Firenze Porta Rossa is more than just an archaic building with a dreamy location – it’s the oldest hotel in Florence, dating all the way back to the 12th century.
Merging old with the new, this five-star stay is ideal if you love a welcoming atmosphere, regal furnishings and mouth-watering cuisine (as well as its 70 luxurious rooms, this central hotel also boasts a Michelin guide restaurant to boot).

Situated within easy walking distance of all the city’s most famous landmarks – including the Duomo, Uffizi Gallery, the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella and Giotto’s Bell Tower, pull on your trainers and explore the city to your heart’s (and camera roll’s) content. if you’re unsure of what to see and where to venture first, the helpful concierge team are on-hand with maps, tips and endless advice to help plan your perfect Italian getaway.
The Room

If it’s something sleek and splendid you’re after, NH Collection Firenze Porta Rossa’s 70 rooms are bound to impress. There are a wide array of room categories to select from, ranging from the Superior Single through to the honeymoon-worthy Torre Monalda Suit.
I stay in a Junior Suite, the unique jewel of which is a huge, impressive ceiling covered in mesmerizing frescos along with the main wall. A statement room full of history and charm, I would easily book this again in a heartbeat just to lie in bed and stare at the mesmerising ceiling.
Not only is the junior suite spacious, but it emulates elegance and class through its luxurious furnishings and art. Interior wise, think regal and opulent. A large four-poster black metal bed takes up most of the space – with a simple contemporary frame, it juxtaposes the historic elements of the room beautifully.

Featuring rich ruby red details embodying Porta Rossa’s history and NH Collection’s brand colours (it’s hard to miss the red chair, red sofas and vase of red roses) decadence is also found in the form of an enormous chandelier, wooden floors and elongated mirrors. It’s a space so comfortable I could easily lounge here for hours – all one needs is a servant to feed you grapes at a whim (or a doting boyfriend, same difference).
Modern details bring a guest back into the 21st century with a huge plasma TV, Nespresso machine and a large bathroom stocked full of toiletries, complimentary facemasks and even makeup.
If you’ve forgotten anything on the self-care front, fear not – NH Collection Firenze Porta Rossa’s thoughtful selection of items is bound to have it, and if not, the team of staff will help you source it with ease. Knowledgeable and friendly, everyone here is only too happy to help organise your perfect stay or recommend restaurants, attractions and hidden must-sees.
Being centrally located means heading back for a quick cat nap or refreshment at the hotel lobby’s complimentary welcome bar is always an option too for when those feet get weary – but just be warned, once you climb under those feather-soft covers… it’s hard to get out.
The Food & Drink

Breakfast at NH Collection Firenze Porta Rossa is a grand buffet affair, served in the main restaurant with station after station of cheeses, meats, scrambled eggs, juices, local dishes, cakes and croissants a plenty.
It’s simple but delicious fare, with several mandatory plate commutes in order for anyone staying here. Frothy coffees are ordered separately, with an additional a la carte menu on offer too.
