Talk about a room with a view. Positioned on the shoreline of Lake Windermere, the UK’s longest body of water, Langdale Chase makes a regal and refined stay when it comes to visiting this slice of UK heaven
Having recently undergone an extensive multi-million renovation, Langdale Chase’s glamorous new look blends sleekly contemporary places to lounge and classically sophisticated decor. Editor Sophie Ritchie steps over the historic threshold to see the modern results of the 12-month project for herself:
The Venue

With a history dating as far back to the 1890s, this is no new kid on the block (or should that be shore). With a construction project that took an initial five years to complete, the archaic building also boasts the title of being the inaugural residence in Windermere to have functioning electricity.

It’s been a fully-fledged hotel since 1930 – an impressive feat – and today welcomes curious visitors from around the world into its armchairs and dining chairs. With connections to several renowned films and novels, including Agatha Christie, Arthur Ransome, William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, that’s hardly surprising so many park up to its gravelled entrance.

Stepping into the main hall reveals a dramatic carved staircase that leads towards the majority of guest bedrooms. It feels historic and regal simply to stand here – the space is decked with fireplaces, tartan furniture, snug places to perch and intricate window panels complete with several heraldic coats of arms. If you’re visiting the UK to absorb some Downton Abbeyism, this hotel makes an excellent fit.
The Room

I lug my suitcase upstairs (one small downside to staying in such a historic building, there’s no elevator) and open the door to our Castle Bray suite, a local landmark that by pure serendipity I had just been exploring before arriving. .
The suite is enormous, divided into a living room area, bedroom and Italian marble-clad bathroom. Sophisticated, comfortable and full of contemporary touches such as bedside USB charging ports, fluffy robes and plasma TVs – and being so spacious, it’s ideal if you like to stretch out during your holidays.
All of the suites and rooms within these walls have been individually designed with the property’s lake location in front of mind – which means plenty of places to leisurely perch and peer out at the surrounding scenery. A welcoming sweet treat awaiting on the living room table sets the tone of our stay – this is a serious spot for the foodies.
The Food & Drink

Langdale Chase’s sense of refinement attracts curious tourists by the masses – and this feeds into their dining options too. With on-site two AA Rosettes restaurant The Dining Room positioned ideally for views across the never-ending Windermere lake, sitting adjacent to the glass provides some serious scenery when lifting your fork.
It’s no secret that gourmet restaurants can be found by the dozen in the Lake District – which means Langdale Chase’s dining experiences have some serious competition. Menu-wise, think seasonal, indulgent and swish presentation, inspired by the surrounding beauty. Cornish crab, Orkney scallop and Bouillabaisse all catch my eye – if you’re a fish or seafood fan, you’re in for a treat here. Service can sometimes lack that attentive ‘wow-factor’ at times, but for what waiters can lack in charisma the outstanding views can certainly make up for.

Come morning, the classic breakfast feasts make excellent sustenance for a busy day of exploring, with a small buffet of continental options such as yoghurt parfaits, pastries and cereals to make your way through too. And if you somehow have room for more, there’s a delightful afternoon tea inspired by Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons to gorge upon too. Although with several rounds of full-sized pastry creations, the chances of you finishing it all are about the same as seeing the Loch Ness Monster pop her head up in the adjacent body of water.
The Wordrobe Verdict

Talk about a room with a view. Positioned on the shoreline of Lake Windermere, the UK’s longest body of water, Langdale Chase makes a regal and refined stay when it comes to visiting this slice of UK heaven. Luxury comes with a steep price tag here, but the classic ambience and outstanding views will have you returning to its tartan armchairs in no time.
