Insider’s Look At The World’s Largest Sauna, Verona’s Hottest Attraction

Heading to Italy this summer? Don’t miss out on a supreme super-sized dose of wellness. In the heart of Valpolicella, just a few minutes from Verona, the Aquardens thermal park is home to an impressive Guinness World Record attraction: the Desert Sauna

Officially the largest sauna in the world, this 180 square metre wellness giant can accommodate up to 300 guests at the same time, transforming the traditional concept of wellness into a monumental experience.

Wellness Becomes Theatre: From Opera to Aufguss Championships

More than just a wooden cabin, this mega sauna, designed by architect and SPA designer Claudia Taiani, was conceived as a true stage, introducing a new concept of “wellness theatre”. Its design philosophy stems from the ambition to move beyond the conventional Nordic sauna model and create a contemporary wellness environment capable not only of welcoming the body, but also of deeply engaging the guests’ senses and emotions.

Its amphitheatre configuration enabled the establishment of an official partnership with the Verona Arena Foundation. For the first time, grand opera enters a SPA environment through exclusive performances choreographed to the music of Verdi and Bizet, specifically designed around guests’ sauna sessions.

At the same time, the space serves as the perfect arena for major international competitions, having already hosted the Aufguss World Championship as well as recent national contests. Here, the world’s best sauna masters compete through towel techniques, music and fragrances, taking advantage of the venue’s exceptional visibility and spectacular steam distribution.

Behind the Record: Claudia Taiani’s Design

Behind the impressive impact of the project lies the work of architect and SPA designer Claudia Taiani, who faced a series of significant engineering and construction challenges to turn such an ambitious vision into reality.

Within a structure of this scale, the primary challenge was ensuring perfectly uniform heat distribution. Airflow dynamics and the power output of the large central heaters were carefully calculated to avoid temperature variations across the six seating levels. This sophisticated thermal system had to be integrated with an advanced technological infrastructure managed from a central control room.

The system synchronises and programs a panoramic LED wall, immersive audio equipment, theatrical water effects and a dedicated entertainment lighting system, considerably more complex than those found in traditional saunas.

The architect coordinated the integration of industrial equipment, ventilation systems and safety devices, concealing them entirely behind architectural solutions and premium Hemlock and Ayous wood finishes.

The result preserves the warm, elegant and welcoming atmosphere expected in a luxury SPA environment. From a construction perspective, the project required precise coordination among the various contractors involved, ensuring the resolution of on-site technical interferences while maintaining both the construction schedule and the required structural standards.

The Desert Oasis: Completing the Sensory Experience

Claudia Taiani’s project extends far beyond the record-breaking sauna itself. The overall development covers 385 square metres and includes the Desert Oasis, an exclusive lounge and relaxation area designed to complete the sauna journey, which traditionally alternates between heat exposure, thermal shock, hydration and rest.

The Oasis features a contemporary design language perfectly aligned with the desert theme. Earthy tones and shades of red, combined with the stylised representation of sand dunes through an elaborate strip LED lighting system, evoke the atmosphere of desert landscapes.

Furnished with premium elements, the space includes a central island designed for gourmet food and cocktail preparation, as well as dedicated facilities for coffee and tea rituals. The result is a complete sensory journey suspended between the warmth of the earth and the beauty of artistic expression.
