All the flair, none of the fluff. Sophie Ritchie pays a visit to the quaint streets of Cirencester for a stay at historic hotel The Fleece
There is something really quite lovely about a little British staycation. Our country is full of beautiful getaways just a short drive or train away, and whilst an EasyJet sale might be tempting, on a gloriously sunny weekend there is nothing quite like the beauty of the glorious English countryside and seeing flocks of people gathered outside somewhere pretty, sipping lattes or something stronger.

A market town boutique hotel filled with juxtaposing surroundings of creaky stairs, Grade II listed features and comfortably modern decor, The Fleece in Cirencester provides everything required for a mini break on homegrown soil. A place to relax in refined interiors whilst enjoying the quaint Cotswolds backdrop and quiet, slow-paced life that flows through the honey-hued streets of this famously historical town.
The Room

Large and luscious, my number ‘4’ room – part of the Feature room category – is spacious and soothing, easy on the eyes with a gorgeous lounge area, vast king-size bed and tucked away bathroom – where separate shower and regal standing bath tub await.
It’s country decor at its coziest. A wooden antique desk, maroon leather sofa, velvety armchair all await a weary explorer – but also a duo of smart TVs, Lavazza coffee machine and all the other contemporary trimmings to bring this into the modern age.
The building’s sheer age means the floors might creak and the taps might whir – but the relaxing surroundings merely make it all add to The Fleece’s inviting charm.
Complete with patterned wall paper, pops of colour and beautifully intricate shower tiles that remind me of Portuguese-inspired adventures, the building’s archaic structure is paired with cheeky see-through panels that peek into the bathroom for added allure. As always, it’s all in the detail here.
The Food & Drink

Salad or steak, this diet-free zone makes dinner time feel as indulgent as it gets. My House Caesar Salad contains enough parmesan for a week’s intake (I’m not complaining) paired perfectly with a bowl of crispy ‘Girl Dinner’ fries. With an ethos based around local ingredients and fresh produce, the a la carte menu is filled with hearty dishes designed for nothing but lip-smacking effect.
Think beer-battered fish, deliciously crusty bread, steak & ale pie and chargrilled lamb cutlets, with plenty of classic puddings to follow on this hearty fare-led menu. Diners can opt to eat inside the charming restaurant or soak up a sunset in the adorable courtyard, where plenty of dining areas await.
Breakfast is an equally satisfying affair, served towards the back of the main restaurant with a small buffet of cereals, yoghurts and pastries – plus a selection of hot classics ordered separately. Now that’s egg-xactly how you start a day’s exploring.
The Wordrobe Verdict

Quaint and quiet, The Fleece is ideal for a simple weekend of pottering around Cirencester and eating your heart out. Chicly historical, its central town location makes exploring the local shops and attractions easy and stress-free – with many nearby sights just a short drive away. Bask in the friendly atmosphere here and get ready to enjoy all of the flair, with none of the fluff.
