Bite into Café Britaly’s new ‘Apericena’ offering

Café Britaly, the critically-acclaimed Peckham restaurant which celebrates Britain’s decades-long love affair with Italian food, has launched ‘Apericena’, an early-evening offering honouring one of Italy’s favourite culinary traditions.
Translating simply as ‘before dinner’, Apericena comprises a sharing platter of savoury snacks, paired with two Negroni Sbagliato or non-alcoholic Crodino or San Bitter aperitivo, for £25, and can be enjoyed on its own or as part of a full meal. The abundant Apericena selection includes salumi; gorgonzola; bruschetta, which might be sardine in saor, tomato and basil, chicken liver, or smoked mackerel pâté; fried polenta; caponata; friggitelli peppers; and flatbread pizzetta.
Apericena began in Italy as a mid-afternoon celebration of abundance after a successful harvest. Trestle tables would be taken out to the fields and the workers would break bread together, before going their separate ways. This evolved into a modern tradition – like brunch, or afternoon tea – of enjoying food and drink together outside of regular meal times.

Let loose with a Anti-Supperclub Wine Rave
On the 30th of August, Close Ties will pop up at Forno for their next wine rave – the anti-supper club collective from Joshua Bratt & Jake Norman. Chef Diarmuid Goodwin (Sager + Wilde, Murano) will be on the food, with music played by Close Ties residents, Stewpot of dontfkwithdisco and newcomer Swoose of feel my bicep, shall not fade and trust music – all at Mitshel Ibrahim’s pastifico by day and event space by night, Forno in Hackney. The evening will follow the Close Ties format: get underground selectors on the decks, pour uncovered gems from the world of natural wine, and put some of London’s most loved chefs behind the grill.
Coming from the minds of Joshua Bratt, General Manager of Carousel, and Jake Norman, General Manager of Trullo, Close Ties rejects the status quo of traditional supper clubs, urging guests to take up the dancefloor while enjoying pours of low-intervention wines and bites from guest chefs.
This unique brand of party atmosphere looks to pull together the hospitality crowd and beyond, with club music, high quality drinks and deluxe snacks all coming together to create the vibe of a Michelin Star house party. Previous events have included Anna Søgaard’s BBQ takeover on the terrace at Salt Space Dalston, a sell-out night at Carousel with Diarmuid Goodwin (Sager + Wilde, Murano); Carousel’s Ollie Templeton at Salt Space; Finn Tonry at Hill and Szork; and Tiella’s Dara Klein at Hatch Homerton.
For the 12th edition of Close Ties, chef Diarmuid Goodwin’s menu will utilise the best of late summer produce, with Duck liver parfait and fig eclair; Scorched mackerel tostada, green strawberry salsa; and Smoked mozzarella panzerotti. Running from 7pm till late, DJ sets on the night will include Northern Irish stalwart Swoose, fresh off the back of AVA and Sonar festivals, and dontf**kwithdisco resident Stewpot, both bringing high energy sets of house and garage music. Twirl your fork at Alba, the all new Amalfi-inspired restaurant in West London

Alba, a new restaurant on the Brompton Road, will bring Amalfi to Knightsbridge: a little slice of the Italian coast, just a stone’s throw from Harrods. Step inside and you will find yourself in rooms that bring the sights and sounds of southern Italy to life.
It has been imagined by the award winning architecture and design studio, YODEZEEN. The colour palette is all olive green, coral pinks, lemon yellows and terracotta, completed with real citrus trees, which will perfume the air, and a handmade Venetian floor. Drawing on Venetian terrace culture, the idea is that indoor and outdoor spaces merge harmoniously.
The interior will feature bespoke pieces from the acclaimed Bradley Wood. The furniture is from the luxury design house Exteta, which specialises in yachts, adding to the maritime feel. Finally there will be tableware from Ginori, the Florentine porcelain house founded in 1735, to complete the mood.
The heart of the room will be a magnificent open kitchen, where the chefs will work their magic in full view. Flowing from the kitchen, there will also be an eye-catching seafood display, with mouthwatering produce, including lobster and langoustine, as well as a sea urchin, king crab and an array of fresh fishes. The menu will change according to what’s in season, but every dish will be elevated with Alba’s luxurious signatures. While the Amalfi vibe might be relaxed, they take their food extremely seriously. As Brunello Cucinelli is to clothes, Alba is to cuisine; relaxed but immaculate.
Alba’s heart will always be on the south coast, but the dishes reflect the very best of Italy. Think mozzarella zizzona – a rich, creamy, signature product of Campania, made with buffalo milk. Or Parmigiano Reggiano Vacche Rosso, a centuries-old recipe which was once made by Benedictine monks in Reggio Emilia.
Among the mains will be Amalfi staples, such as Risotto con gamberi & lemon, and Sicilian Gamberi Rossi di Mazara, while other regions of Italy will be handsomely represented, too: like the Paccheri with white Alba truffle, a Piedmontese classic. It’s just one example of how the menu will take traditional delicacies and give them luxurious flourishes with the world’s best ingredients, including caviar, truffle, wagyu or yellowfin tuna.

Tuck into Trejos Tacos, Notting Hill

Already an institution in LA, Trejos Tacos is one of Notting Hill’s hottest new openings, brough to the capital by the legend that is Danny Trejo. Spanning two storeys, downstairs has a speakeasy bar vibe, whereas upstairs is more of a traditional restaurant space, plus there’s an al fresco terrace that offers the perfect spot to sip on a marg’ or two whilst watching the hustle and bustle of Portobello Road go by.
We headed to the new opening party and were seriously impressed with the Jalapeno Margarita. It had the perfect level of heat and went down far too easily – dangerous in the best kind of way!
As for the food, a variety of tacos are on offer alongside soups and salads, burrito bowls, small plates and sides. We tucked into a mushroom asada with salsa verde and a grilled chicken taco with chipotle slaw and both were packed full of flavour and texture, and can only imagine the rest of the menu is just as moreish.
With its enticing food, punchy margs and prime location – we’re sure this spot is set to be a hit.

Pay a visit to Café Britaly and celebrate Britain’s love-affair with Italian food

Café Britaly, an all-day restaurant celebrating Britain’s long love-affair with Italian food, will open on Rye Lane in Peckham on Wednesday 8th May. It will be the first hospitality venture for co-owners Richard Crampton-Platt and chef Alex Purdie, who met working at renowned regional Italian restaurant Bocca di Lupo.
Claiming only to be “authentically Britalian”, Café Britaly will serve nostalgic renditions of beloved Italian dishes, viewed from the perspective of the British isles, alongside British classics updated with Italian ingredients.
Spaghetti carbonara will naturally contain cream, adorned with a greasy spoon-style fried egg, while the ‘Full Britalian’ breakfast will include fennel sausages, fried pizza dough, and beans inspired by the Tuscan dish fagioli all’uccelletto.
The 40-cover, muted mid-century-style interior, to Richard and Alex’s own design, will be a reinvention of the kind of Italian-run British cafés whose long history Richard admits to being “obsessed” with. Walls will be adorned with bursts of colour from posters by great designers of the era, while green linoleum floors and banquette seating with pink detailing and cushions will be a subtly rose-tinted reference to the Italian flag.
With Café Britaly, Richard and Alex intend to create somewhere genuinely hospitable, blending the spirit of Italian adventure, diversity and creativity with the tastes, comfort and humour of the British. Both south London dwellers, Richard and Alex’s hope is that Café Britaly will be appreciated as much by Peckham locals as those making a journey to experience this merging of two food cultures.
When: Café Britaly will open on Wednesday 8th May.
Where: Café Britaly, 191 Rye Lane, London SE15 4TP
