Château la Commaraine To Re-Open After Four-Year Renovation Project

Opening to wine-loving guests this spring, Château la Commaraine will feature 37 uniquely designed rooms and suites, two unique restaurant offerings, a spa and fitness centre, including an 18 metre heated outdoor pool and the estate’s own Cuverie

Château la Commaraine is set to open its doors in spring 2026 after an extensive four year renovation as an elegant five-star hotel, set within its own vineyard. This will be the first luxury property of its kind in Burgundy, located in Pommard just 2.5 miles from the world renowned wine capital, Beaune.

Dating back to 1112, the estate is home to a rich and storied winemaking history and has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2015. The climats of Pommard, including the estate’s own Clos de la Commaraine, are recognised globally for producing the finest and most powerful red wines in Burgundy.

Château la Commaraine will feature 37 uniquely designed rooms and suites, two unique restaurant offerings, a spa and fitness centre, including an 18 metre heated outdoor pool and the estate’s own Cuverie, built within the chateau itself, coupled with panoramic terraces to enjoy sweeping views of the vineyard.

The property will additionally offer a private four-bedroom residence with its own exclusive tasting room. This latest opening will form part of Champagne Hospitality’s collection of award-winning properties, which includes the much-loved Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa in Épernay.

Design That Pays Homage

The revival of Château la Commaraine reflects a deliberate desire to blend effortlessly with the village of Pommard and the surrounding landscape. The hotel’s design weaves together Burgundian traditions and stonework with elegant, contemporary interiors.

The beautifully restored original features were masterminded by renowned architect Richard Martinet, who utilised the classic aesthetic of Burgundy’s white stone in the façade and build of the property. In keeping with the spirit of the restoration, the rooms have also preserved a sense of privacy and discretion befitting a respectful renovation.

The Affine Design studio has followed this approach for the interiors, choosing to feature intricate wood panelling and soft blond, light tones throughout, crafted in perfect harmony with the château’s historic prestige.

Burgundy’s Viticultural Heritage

Château la Commaraine has long been part of Burgundy’s viticultural history. Originally built as a fortified manor by Hugues II, Duke of Burgundy, the estate has since passed through generations of noble families including the de Vienne lineage, whose 16th-century renovations elevated its prominence in the region. The region’s wines are globally and historically renowned, which notably drew the attention of Thomas Jefferson in 1787, who ordered 124 bottles for his personal cellar, declaring the estate’s wine as “of excellent quality”.

Confiscated during the Revolution and later revived by Ulysse Jaboulet-Vercherre in the 20th century, Château la Commaraine became known not only for its winemaking excellence but for its storied array of visitors, amongst them being the Queen Mother and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. In 2017, the estate entered a new chapter under Denise Dupré and Mark Nunnelly of Champagne Hospitality, who purchased the property with the aim of restoring the property to its former splendour.

Regional Gastronomy

Ideal for the foodies, Château la Commaraine invites guests to experience a true gastronomic journey, deeply rooted in the region and its indigenous produce through two distinct dining experiences. Located in the original 14th century tower of the Château, with windows overlooking the vineyards, the relaxed Burgundy-style bistro ‘Le Clos’ will offer regional and seasonal classics alongside superb wines.

Meanwhile, the fine-dining restaurant ‘LE VIII’ will follow in Spring, offering innovative fine French cuisine, set within the estate’s former vaulted cellar. Both restaurants are helmed by Christophe Raoux, Meilleur Ouvrier de France and Executive Chef of Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa, who brings a precise and thoughtful approach to cuisine. This philosophy will be carried forward within the château by Head Chef Jérôme Rioux.

Divine Immersive Experiences

Of course, expect all things wine to be top of the excursion agenda. Guests are encouraged to immerse themselves within the spectacular region of Burgundy by partaking in a range of exclusive viticultural experiences, tastings and tours.

From daily viticultural activities and bespoke tastings, visits to the estate’s Cuverie, sunrise hot air balloon excursions, to cycling through picturesque wine villages and local excursions to explore the wider region, Château la Commaraine is a working estate and winery offering guests a true insight into its rich history and unique winemaking traditions.
