Jetting off to a destination wedding this summer? Here are the key things to pack when it comes to packing for a ceremony in the sun
Have you been invited to your first destination wedding? Attending a ceremony abroad means you can combine celebrating a key milestone in someone’s life with exploring a brand-new destination. However, it also requires careful planning so that you’re prepared for the trip itself, as well as the big day.
Here are things to consider when packing for a wedding abroad.
Wedding day outfit

When selecting your outfit, you’ll need to base your decision around the climate and setting. Lightweight and fun wedding guest dresses are ideal for tropical or warm-weather destinations as they help you stay cool while looking radiant. Ideally, choose outfits made from fabrics like cotton, linen, and chiffon as these allow your skin to breathe.
Remember to pack a pashmina or light shawl for evening events – these serve as a stylish accessory and practical addition if the temperature drops. Be mindful of the local culture too, as some destinations may require more conservative attire for certain parts of the day.
If the ceremony is in a cooler location, layered outfits are practical for transitioning from day to night.
Make-up and cosmetics
Carefully select your make-up and cosmetics so you can maintain your beauty routine while abroad without taking up too much space in your luggage. If there’s potential for heat and humidity, it’s sensible to bring long-lasting, waterproof make-up, as well as a good primer and setting spray so your make-up stays intact throughout the day. A compact mirror is another valuable item for touch-ups.
SPF is a must, especially for outdoor ceremonies. Luckily, there are plenty of non-greasy SPF products that can be worn under your make-up. Alternatively, a tinted moisturiser with SPF can be a great two-in-one option.
Hair products
For hair care, travel-sized shampoos, conditioners, and styling products are the way to go. If you’re visiting a humid climate, anti-frizz serums or sprays can help maintain your hairstyle. A small hairdryer is useful if your accommodation doesn’t provide one.
Consider the possibility of not having access to your usual hairstyling tools and plan accordingly. Simple, elegant hairstyles like braids, buns, or loose waves can be achieved without tools. You may also want to wear your hair up if it’s due to be hot on the day.
Shoes
When it comes to footwear, comfort is key. Weddings often involve a lot of standing and dancing so pack a pair of shoes that will help you get through the day. Block heels or wedges are a good choice as they provide stability and are easier to walk in on uneven surfaces like grass or sand. If the venue has strict dress codes, make sure your shoes align with those requirements.
It’s worth packing a pair of flats or sandals for more casual events or for when you need a break from heels. Cushioned insoles can be a lifesaver if you plan to wear heels for an extended period.
