“The land, the people, the light.” And now, the music.
With an annual Jazz & Arts Festival that grows more popular with every year, this mountainously magical island’s national motto summarises the vibrancy of Saint Lucian life and the affable attitude of its welcoming community. Ideal for anyone with a love of both sand and smooth serenading, editor Sophie Ritchie shares how to plan a visit around the Caribbean’s premier jazz festival and experience an adagio-paced Saint Lucian adventure
A Caribbean island most typically known for its romantic nature and scenery so sweet that it puts the ‘honey’ in honeymoon, there’s far more entertainment, adventure and wellness-led experiences nestled in Saint Lucia’s voluptuous landscape than first meets the eye.
Whilst this volcanic island might be petite in size – being only 43km long and 23km wide – its diverse landscape allows a luxury traveler to traverse lush jungle, sandy beaches, soaring mountains and shimmering ocean waters, where some of the world’s best snorkelling and scuba diving opportunities await.

With a landscape so naturally captivating it earned the nickname ‘Helen of the West’ after Europeans settlers compared her extraordinary beauty to that of the famed Helen of Troy, the slow-paced nature of Saint Lucia’s easygoing culture invites an email-chained modern bon vivant to put down the laptop and pick up a fresh coconut water instead – sliced and served straight in front of you faster than you can say “Out of Office”.

This is a destination where the typical sense of urgency, strict rules and fast-paced life dissipates into the horizon like one of the Caribbean’s brilliant cotton candy sunsets – replaced with a beaming smile and friendly greeting from Saint Lucia’s inviting community instead.
Drum roll, please.

With an annual Jazz & Arts Festival that grows more popular with every year, this mountainous island’s schedule of smooth entertainment, hosted throughout several weeks across April – May, attracts both locals and the wider globe’s music lovers in droves. Featuring some of the most impressive names in modern jazz, performances take place in intimate venues and beautiful public settings throughout the island.
By day, switch off and soak up the serenity with the island’s array of charming hotels, unique restaurants and intrepid excursions – but when night falls, make your way to the unique location of northern beauty spot Pigeon Island, where the majority of the events take place, for a non-stop evening of entertainment spent swaying or strutting to the ambience with thousands of other attendees on this 44-acre islet.

Headline artists always include a wide spectrum of talent – 2025’s finale showcased the grooves of ‘Boogie Wonderland’s’ iconic Earth, Wind and Fire – with John Legend bringing the metaphorical house down with his soulful croons and iconic ‘All of Me’ performance during a set filled with hit after hit. But along with the household names, other Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival nights offer the opportunity to experience authentic Caribbean-themed acts from nearby islands, as well as rock, gospel, Soca, reggae, and of course, the sounds of Pure Jazz.

There’s also a handful of somewhat unexpected Country Western performances – a genre that Saint Lucians can’t get enough of. Travel around via taxi during your stay and expect to hear radio stations playing country anthems so often you’ll debate where you should have packed the cowboy hat. In fact, even the local buses are named after Jim Reeves songs!
Hold on to your hats

Prise yourself off the sun lounger and try one of Saint Lucia’s tropical adventures and excursions:
1 Zip line across the jungle with Rainforest Adventures
Sight-see the more unusual way with this adrenaline-boosting zip line activity. Following an extensive safety briefing, don a hard hat and explore the thriving jungle terrain by getting (firmly) attached to a series of cables – then zip from platform to platform in the tree canopy, with the team’s experts guiding you along the way. There’s even a ‘baby’ zip line to help settle any nerves before the real Tarazan action starts. Don’t forget to pack your mosquito spray, as a jungle location means these flying rascals will be out on the prowl. rainforestadventure.com

2 Climb the famous pitons with the Saint Lucia Three Peaks Challenge
Consider yourself in ‘peak’ physique? Push your fitness to its limits with this invigorating challenge and earn the glory of conquering the island’s most majestic climbs by taking on three of its most formidable mountains in a single day. Begin with the ascent of Mount Gimie, the highest peak in Saint Lucia, before taking on the iconic Gros Piton and Petit Piton, two majestic volcanic peaks that rise dramatically from the ocean (and are considered themselves to be a symbol of the island’s strength and resilience). Post-adventure, treat yourself to a replenishing cocktail (or three) at nearby Stonefield Villa Resort to commemorate the sweaty occasion.
3 Rejuvenate with a volcanic mud bath experience
Ideal for the wellness lovers, Saint Lucia is also home to its very own dormant volcano. Located towards the south, this sulphur-tastic excursion makes an excellent day trip for both geology lovers and skincare enthusiasts. Home to a number of small mud baths, these warm bodies of grey mud contain natural properties that can help detox the body whilst aiding sun burn, eczema, sore joints and more – leaving skin looking fresh and younger by the time you’ve climbed back out. Not only rejuvenating, many visitors fully embrace their creative side by painting elaborate mud-based body art designs. Post-dip, there’s also a nearby 50ft waterfall to wash off in for further added refreshment. sulphurspringstlucia.com

Lunch here: Pink Plantation
Much like the name suggests, this pink-clad property is a feast for the senses. Loved for its deliciously fresh menu of Creole meets French fusion cuisine, come for the salads and stay for the art. Owner Michelle’s paintings and handmade painted pottery can be admired around the different rooms and in-house art studio, with many pieces for-sale. Sitting atop the hillside known as the ‘Morne’, this picturesque spot overlooks Castries harbor, the Caribbean Sea, and in the distance if your eyesight is good enough, the island of Mustique. *Chefs kiss* pink-plantation-house.lesserantilleshotels.com
Craft this: Chocolate making at Howelton Estate 1896
If it’s good enough for the RHOBH, it’s good enough for us. Situated a little more than 200 metres above the city of Castries, further impressive views await at this informative meets mouth-watering foodie experience. This expert hands-on workshop gives chocoholics the chance to learn how to make their very own chocolate bar as they grind cacao nibs into the silky foundation for a fully-finished creation. Stay Here: Sandals Grande St Lucian

When it comes to the Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival, the large Sandals Grande St Lucian resort offers one advantage that no other property can compete with – it’s a mere 10-minute stroll from the main festival action, located just a quick sandy beach walk away from Pigeon Island. Avoid the inevitable heaving traffic or water taxi queues and sink into a nearby four-poster bed instead within one of the luxe resort’s 311 rooms and suites.
This adults-only stay offers an all-inclusive experience with aquamarine waters and pristine white sand beaches, which have seen many a proposal or nautical nuptial ceremony. As well as boasting its own private peninsula, there’s 12 specialty restaurants to devour, ranging from Italian, ice cream and Indian through to Caribbean, crepes and Asian cuisine. Formal or fast food, there’s a dish for every appetite.

Featuring balconies or terraces, the comfortable rooms at Sandals Grande St Lucian come kitted out with king-size beds, luxe Red Lane Spa toiletries, constantly refilled drinks and the modern tickbox of free Wi-Fi. There’s also handy mini fridges and coffee-making facilities for those that can’t travel sans caffeine. For something extra exclusive, snap up one of the lavish overwater Butler Bungalows, complete with glass floor panels and over-water hammocks – but act fast as these coveted abodes are often fully-booked for the majority of the year.

An excellent base for a full-on week of adventuring no matter which room category you choose, fill up on the endless breakfast buffet spread at Bayside where fresh fruits, sweet treats and omelette stations await, before slathering on the sunscreen and dipping a toe (or full body) into one of the many pools dotted around the resort.
An oceanside location means excellent water sport opportunities, with even PADI® certified scuba diving excursions available to book for an additional fee. For those who can’t fathom a holiday sans cardio, an excellent on-site gym features modern TechnoGym machines, weights and mats galore.
