Review: Sunday Roasts in the Sky at Coq D’Argent

If you’re seeking a Sunday roast that is not only delicious, but also good value and accompanied by warm service and seriously good views – look no further than Coq D’Argent in the City, says writer Alissa Stroud

Venture into the lift and climb above the bustle below and you’ll find a spacious garden oasis of a restaurant. Coq D’Argent has an extensive outdoor seating area including a showstopping terrace that juts out into the city offering near 360 degree views of the skyline. I can imagine it is absolutely packed on a sunny summer’s day, providing the perfect spot to sink a rosé or three.

We visited in early April and whilst it was a mild spring afternoon, it was definitely not warm enough for al fresco dining so we headed inside. The interiors are a treat, though, with floor to ceiling windows at one end flooding the room with natural light.

The vibe is smart and contemporary, with soft and neutral tones, and whilst it was relatively quiet when we visited it still had a lovely atmosphere.

The Food & Drink

A French restaurant led by Head Chef Damien Rigollet, we were here to sample Coq D’Argent’s take on a classic Sunday roast. First thing to note is that the roast is truly exceptional value, with two courses priced at £30 and three at £35. Considering the gorgeous location, you really can’t say fairer than that.

As we perused the menu, a gorgeous mini loaf of warm, crusty yet oh so soft bread was placed on the table with a good slab of salty butter – perfect to entice our appetites.

To start, my guest and I opted to share Crevettes Bouquet – six large prawns in their shell that were suitably meaty, served with a homemade mustard mayonnaise that added a touch of heat. Alongside that, we had burrata with Rhone-Alps grown heritage tomatoes in a number of vibrant colours, topped with pine nuts, basil pesto and black olive oil. The burrata was as creamy as you’d hope it would be, and the other ingredients simple, fresh and light.

Both my guest and I couldn’t resist the 40 days dry-aged Angus Hereford Sirloin when it came to mains. The meat was melt in the mouth tender, and I truly mean buttery soft. It was so flavourful and the portion size was impressive.

Alongside the meat, crispy crunchy potatoes with a soft and light inside were delicious. The vegetables carried a French theme too – roast onion, carrots and parsnips in a sticky glaze. All this was topped with a jus that packed an impressive amount of meaty, umami flavour.

When I mentioned the portion size was impressive – I wasn’t kidding. So much so that we were actually defeated by the roast and didn’t quite have room for pudding sadly. We did manage to find space for a couple of the gorgeous chocolate truffles placed on the table however, which were a suitably sweet note to finish on not to mention rich, indulgent and delicious.
