Kitchen Design Tips for Art Lovers

With just a few minor changes, you can transform your kitchen into the space of your dreams. Discover core kitchen inspiration with these design ideas

If you have a passion for the visual arts, then you might find that the kitchen provides an unexpected outlet for it. With just a few small changes, you can transform your kitchen into an inviting and vibrant place to be. After all, when you’re cooking, a little bit of visual stimulation is sure to provide the required inspiration.

But what form might this inspiration take? Let’s take a look at a few possibilities.

A Gallery Wall

If you have a spare wall in the kitchen, you might turn it into a small gallery. Ideally, the content of this gallery will complement the space. Food-themed illustrations, sweeping rural landscapes, and recipe cards can all make a difference. Ideally, you’ll want this gallery wall somewhere that it can be easily seen by a person preparing food. If you have an island in the kitchen, position the gallery wall opposite the chopping board!

Backsplash Art

In some cases, art might be installed directly behind the stove. This way, you’ll be able to contemplate it while you’re stir-frying. If you’re considering a luxury fitted kitchen, then you might consider installing a new backsplash as part of the project.

Look for a design that reflects your personal taste – but bear in mind that mosaics are harder to keep clean. Dense tiling is more difficult to clean. To opt for it is to risk grime accumulating, especially if you’re in the habit of deep-frying at high heat.

Functional Art

Art doesn’t have to be purely decorative. You might look to express yourself in the kitchen through the items that you create and serve food with. Glassware, crockery, pottery and cooking tools can all be works of art in their own right.

Just make sure that you’re actually using them, rather than stowing them away for an extra-special occasion that never arrives. After all, your kitchen should be a place where you feel inspired and empowered to create food, rather than a place where you feel nervous that something is going to break. In other words, your kitchen is not a museum!

Mix and Match

Your kitchen space should reflect your personal outlook and aesthetic sensibilities. If everything matches perfectly with everything else, then your kitchen risks looking a little impersonal. Add a few vintage items, flea-market finds, and special one-off paintings, and you’ll be well on your way to an inviting space that’s personal to you.
