Hotel Review: Great Fosters, Surrey

Even the most cynical of beings would find it hard to resist the romantic enchantment of Great Fosters in Surrey, says editor Sophie Ritchie when she spends the weekend at this historically grand country pile

Pulling up to Great Fosters remarkably manicured gravel drive, it’s clear this was a building built to impress anyone that came across it even back in 16th century England, when this grand mansion was first originally constructed.

With stately windows, a listed topiary garden and even a moat, I find my jaw dropping ever so slightly before I even pick up the keys from reception. This is the kind of building that evokes a ‘wow’ long before you even step into your abode.

Playing host to an exclusive 56 individually-crafted bedrooms and suites, Great Fosters is undeniably a ‘special occasions’ kind of stay. I can’t help but eavesdrop on the couple checking in before me who are celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary after getting married within these very grounds – or noticing just how many love birds in general there are.

With such plush furnishings, intricate decor and mesmerising landscapes to admire, I too would beeline here for any kind of milestone worth raising a toast towards. It’s the gardens that really capture my attention, with a prestigious eyeful of perfectly-trimmed hedges, secret spots to nestle, a natural grass amphitheatre and even a hidden on-site lake. It’s nothing short of enchanting, like Bridgerton on steroids – and I understand in a heartbeat why so many choose to get married or host soirees within this al fresco wonderland.

As well as a large heated outdoor pool, rustic-style hot tub and small array of spa treatment rooms, there’s another evident reason for booking this peaceful Surrey stay. It’s an edible one of course, with not one but two excellent restaurants situated within these art-clad archaic walls.

The most notable is the Tudor Pass, the property’s creme de la creme Michelin-starred gastronomic restaurant with Head Chef Alex Payne at the helm, serving up tasting menus fit for the gods.

For something more relaxed but still exceptional, the elegant Estate Grill with its lime green leather chairs offers a more informal dining experience with an a la carte style selection of locally-sourced meat, fish and vegetarian dishes.

Presented beautifully from our delicate Isle of Wight tomato and burrata starter through to a glimmering Line Caught Stonebass main, it’s clear there is great attention to detail that goes into every mouthful at Great Fosters. Service can sometimes be a little less off the mark, with a mix of exceptional staff and a rare more doddery slower-paced level of service.

Breakfast is also served in the Estate Grill, providing an atmospheric start to the day with its wooden beam ceiling and original Tudor fireplaces. Guests can choose from a dainty selection of continental pastries, yoghurt and cereals or opt for an a la carte selection of hot dishes and breakfast classics.

The Room

The main house, which dates back to 1550, features a selection of beautiful historic suites and bedrooms, whilst more contemporary abodes can also be found within The Cloisters, The Dower House and The Coach House.

We stay in the Clarence Suite, one of the Historic Splendid Suites which are spread across The Dower House and Main House. Opening the door to the vast space feels like walking into someone’s prestigious living room. As well as a deep purple velvet sofa, beautiful wooden TV stand and huge king size bed, the room also comes kitted out with delicate furnishings such as a bookshelf dotted with books, vases, plants and other beautiful but fragile items on every shelf. I admire from afar and settle in with a Lavazza coffee instead, curled up on the couch with my fluffy robe faster than you can say “accident-prone”.

The room is immensely comfortable but it’s the giant bed that steals the show with its vibrant patterned headboard, cloud-inspired pillow mountain and silkily soft duvet. Simultaneously extravagant and elegant, it’s hard to find a corner that doesn’t feel luxurious within the suite.

Two wooden double doors open to reveal a bathroom almost as large as the main bedroom, with both a walk-in shower and standing bathtub awaiting me. Featuring a soothing grey colour scheme, artistic selection of circular mirrors and endless mini bottles of Temple Spa toiletries, let the bubbles commence.

Things To Try

1 A mere 10-minute drive away awaits the regal The Savill Garden, a Crown Estate-run entity from which one can explore the afternoon away with a mix of trails, manicured paths and beautiful lakes. Adventure far enough and you’ll reach Windsor via the iconic Long Walk – but there’s also the option of simply packing the pooch and strolling around the garden’s many routes. Parking is eye-watering, but the serene views are well worth it. windsorgreatpark.co.uk

2 Don the robe waiting in your room’s cupboard and swim lengths in the gloriously heated outdoor pool. On a sunny morning, there’s no better start to the day than a quick refreshing dip in this grand basin.

3 Great Fosters is located directly adjacent to the Surrey Cycleway, a 94 mile circular tour around the county. We’re not suggesting you take on the entire challenge, but the wide paths are ideal for a morning jog or borrowing one of the chic on-site bicycles to explore nearby Egham in style.
