8 Merry Ways to Decorate Your Home for Christmas

Christmas just won’t feel quite like Christmas unless your house is suitably decorated. But Christmas decorations come in many different forms, which means that you’ll have scope to choose something that matches your tastes. Let’s run through a few of the main options:

Put up a Christmas tree

In most houses, the Christmas tree forms the centrepiece of everything. You’ll have a choice between a real tree and a fake plastic one. The latter can be easily stashed in the loft until the next time, making it more practical. White snow-effect trees are popular these days, but the more traditional green sort haven’t gone anywhere. What really matters is your choice of decorations. Baubles and special ornaments can help to make everything pop.

Christmas lights

Lighting can make a huge difference to the overall vibe of your home. Fairy lights can be spread around key locations, and draped over the tree. Don’t forget to light up the outside of your home, too: a big, showy item like a light-up reindeer can help to remind visitors and passers-by what time of year it is.

Hang up a Christmas Wreath

A wreath is a simple and classic decoration. Traditionally, you’ll hang it on the front door – though any suitably blank surface will do. You can put it outdoors, or leave it indoors. If you’d like, you can even make your own. It makes sense to shop for quality when it comes to your wreath, since you’ll be hanging it every year.

Paper baubles

Not all baubles need to be of the hard kind. Paper baubles are available in a range of incredible patterns. They look amazing, and they tend to be much more environmentally friendly than the alternative.

Deck the halls

The hallway is the first room your guests will encounter when they arrive for Christmas festivities. It’s important to make a suitably Christmassy impression on them. This usually means spreading decorations across the walls, and up the banisters. The bannister tends to be a popular place to hang tinsel and baubles since there are usually a lot of places to attach these things.

Handmade decorations

If you’re artistically inclined, or you know someone who is, then you can make your own decorations. A little bit of paint, glue and glitter can go a long way!

A personalised bauble will tend to evoke quite a lot of nostalgia, especially if the kids make it. You might be hanging on to the decorations you make for years to come – so make sure that they’re up to the required standard!

Christmassy candles

The Christmas vibe isn’t just a visual thing. You’ll also want to make to create the right aromas. The scent of certain spices and flowers will evoke the festive spirit just like the first few bars of ‘All I Want for Christmas’. Put the candles in hallways and living spaces. Make sure that you’re observing basic fire safety precautions, especially if you’re going to be drinking at the same time!

Presents

If you wrap up your presents early and stack them artfully underneath the tree, then they’ll help to make the space feel more Christmassy. You’ll also help to generate some hype around exactly what’s contained in those little boxes. Just make sure that no one’s shaking or feeling the presents to try to figure out what they are!
