Championing mushrooms as the future of fashion, Stella McCartney is releasing the world’s first commercial luxury handbag crafted from mycelium, the root-like structure of fungi this summer
Paving the way forward for sustainable fashion, British fashion house Stella McCartney is releasing the Frayme Mylo™️, the world’s first-ever designer bag crafted from mycelium – a material made from the root-like structures of fungi. Launched at the brand’s SS22 runway show, a limited and numbered run of just 100 will be available to purchase later this year.
Handcrafted by Italian artisans trained specially to work with Mylo™️, an innovative and incredibly realistic vegan alternative to animal leather, the new bag is an eco-friendly win from tip to toe. Crafted using mycelium grown in a lab by the brand’s long-term partners, Bolt Threads, the bag will also feature a recyclable aluminium chain and medallion, making the bag immediately recognisable as a Stella icon.

Dan Widmaier, founder and chief executive at Bolt Threads, commented in a statement: “It’s been an honour to partner so closely with Stella and her team as they break new ground in luxury fashion with Mylo.
“Their category defining leadership of animal-free fashion and championship of sustainable materials is paving a path forward towards a more responsible fashion industry. Bringing the first-ever luxury bag made from Mylo to market is a massive milestone for conscientious consumers, the biomaterials industry, and the future of luxury fashion.”
