Jessica Goldstein heads to ULI in Notting Hill for a night of Asian indulgence
Surrounded by the buzz and energy of Notting Hill, Asian restaurant ULI is a design oasis of blue and white chic.
Offering a holiday-like haven in the middle of Ladbroke Road, ULI serves Chinese, Thai, Malay and Singaporean cuisine, with a large menu that’s sure to satisfy even the fussiest of diners.
The Food
With such a breadth of Asian cuisines across one menu, this can often spark alarm bells of poor quality –the Jack of all trades, master on none effect. However, at ULI this actually just provides more options and less bickering. You fancy Pad Thai and I fancy Sweet and Sour Chicken? That’s fine! We’ll get both!
However, the menu is a little unadventurous – sort of like a best hits album for each of the Asian cuisines available. But who doesn’t like a best hits album? After all, they’re supposed to be the best of the hits!
My friend and I go for a mix of beef, fish and vegetables including salt and pepper soft shell crab, stir-fried beef fillet with spicy black pepper sauce and asparagus with black bean, chilli and ginger. All very tasty, definitely moreish but I didn’t come away feeling it was overly memorable.
The Venue
The venue is beautiful, almost similar is style to a Mykonos beach club. The white sofas and blue pillows bring a sense of summer and calm and all-round good feeling.
The space is light and airy and fantastic for people watching if you’re sat in the conservatory area which sits at the front of the restaurant. There is a fantastic atmosphere at this place, it’s perfect for almost any occasion as it feels both fun and romantic. The staff are also totally charming.
The Wordrobe Verdict
Tasty food, lovely staff and a beautiful venue is a fail-safe equation for a great night of feasting – and feast you will at ULI.
Prices are a little high, you are in West London after all, but all food is great for sharing so make sure to order lots and there’s lots on offer.
