Restaurant Review: Bocconcino, Mayfair

Emma Blunt indulges with an evening of sleek Italian feasting at Bocconcino in Mayfair

London’s Italian restaurant scene is as varied as the food-loving country itself, and one of the most luxurious is Bocconcino.

Boasting a prime location in the heart of Mayfair, this Berkeley Street eatery follows the best culinary principles of Italy – quality ingredients and traditional cooking methods paired with an extensive list of the finest Italian wines.

The Venue


A large grand door set into the wall welcomes you in, and everything immediately oozes Italian style – from the exposed brick walls and cappuccino colours to the luxuriously oversized artworks and soft Italian jazz.

The restaurant is split into two parts – a downstairs, known for its wood fired oven pizzas, casual and buzzing ambience, and the upstairs which provides a more intimate setting, perfect for a date night or special occasion.


The service provided was truly first class, with the friendly and attentive staff ensuring our glasses were never empty, supplying us with recommendations for dishes to try and the best wines to pair them with.

They even provided entertainment in the form of a giant cheese wheel in the restaurant – turning cooking into a performance of melting the cheese, adding in the fresh homemade pasta, spinning and plating it in front of the table eagerly awaiting their perfectly indulgent pasta creation.

The Food

At first glance you could be forgiven for thinking the hugely vast menu would mean the food wouldn’t be up to par – let me assure you that this was not the case.

To start I opted for the scallops on a cauliflower purée and bottarga. The delicately seared scallops were perfectly complemented by the creamy cauliflower purée.


But it was the addition of the bottarga drizzled over the dish which really brought it to life – this slightly salted, cured fish roe really added a slightly salted layer to the dish which left me wanting more.


For my main I couldn’t resist the linguine with Scottish lobster and cherry tomato. It’s hard to make a pasta dish look sophisticated but the chef managed to pull it off. Not only did it look incredible, it also tasted divine.


The pasta was just al dente enough, and there was a gratifyingly generous amount of rich sauce which was accompanied by the effortlessly succulent lobster and sweetness of the tomatoes.

Although I was full, I managed to find a little bit of room for dessert. I chose the Tiramisu and can assure any coffee lover that this Italian classic could not be faulted.

The immediate punch of the strong coffee was followed by creamy mascarpone cheese and perfectly soft sponge – a true delight for the taste buds and a wonderful way to round off a beautiful dinner.

The Wordrobe Verdict


Mayfair may be the most expensive property on the Monopoly board, but the quality of Bocconcino’s authentic and flavoursome food is unparalleled. If the menu wasn’t temptation enough, the relaxed atmosphere and first class experience will have you flocking here.

For anyone who wants to be transported to the magic of Italy though their culinary senses, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend that you pass Go, take a Chance and don’t stop until you land in Bocconcino.
