Old Money Aesthetic: Five Ways to Dress Classy

Capturing the ‘old money’ aesthetic is easier than you think. By following a few basic tips, you can get the best from the ‘Old Money’ look. The Wordrobe shares how:

TikTok has had an enormous influence on the world of fashion, and nowhere can we find a better demonstration of this than the ‘Old Money’ trend that’s currently sweeping the social network.

This new aesthetic is, as you might imagine, based on the styles of yesteryear. The biggest names in politics and showbusiness of the 90s, 80s and 70s. If you want to look like you belong to a stylistic dynasty, then this is probably the trend for you.

Fortunately, you needn’t have particularly deep pockets to pull this off. By following a few basic tips, you can get the best from the ‘Old Money’ look. Let’s take a look at a few of them.

Go for quality

It might be tempting to fill your wardrobe with masses of 90s-inspired items from the local charity shop. But it’s better to be selective. This doesn’t mean we have to spend big: it just means that we need to develop an eye for quality so that we can pick it up when we see it. Many fantastic items from bygone decades have made their way onto the second-hand market. Finding them is just a matter of knowing what to look for.

When it comes to quality, getting the right fit is paramount. So, don’t just look for an item of roughly the right size – see whether it can be tailored to fit the contours of your body. Rich people (for the most part) tend to be willing to spend a little extra on clothes that fit properly. If you want to project that ‘Old Money’ vibe, then so too should you be.

Timeless colours and patterns

This is a trend which puts bold, classic patterns and colour schemes to the fore. Bold, monochrome stripes and checks will all work nicely. Go for neutrality over loud, brash colours. You can allow the shapes to do the talking, rather than the hues. Simplicity is the name of the game.

Diamonds

When it comes to jewellery, there’s one particular mineral that’s proven consistently popular for decades: the diamond. These are naturally prized by the uber-wealthy, and they tend to command high prices. However, there are a few ways to find stones of good quality without spending over the odds. Look for diamonds which sit just under the major thresholds when it comes to carat ratings. A ninety-nine-point diamond will look just as good as a one-carat one, but the price difference might be significant.

Diamond earrings are a great way to suggest Old Money wealth. Rings, bracelets and necklaces can all do the same thing.

The ‘Chanel’ suit

Chanel made their brand of suit famous in the 1920s, and they’ve been consistently popular throughout the ensuing century. Many other brands have sought to replicate the style, which means that you needn’t spend thousands to obtain the same effect. Again, if you’re willing to look through a charity shop, or go second-hand, then you might find these suits at significant discounts.

The polo shirt

If you’re hitting the bar after a game of tennis, squash or, indeed, polo, then you’ll want to be suitably attired. The classic polo shirt provides exactly the required look. It’s the one favoured by presidents, tycoons, and other wealthy individuals. It’s a classic look that can be obtained even with limited resources.
