The Wordrobe gets up close and professional with Judy Joo, Chef Patron of Jinjuu


Judy Joo is something of a gourmet girl boss. A former sales trader turned chef and restauranter, Judy’s work ethic and passion for Korean cooking has made her a household name across the world.

We caught up with Judy to find out more about what it takes to succeed in the culinary world…

What inspired you to change career and become a chef?
Life is too short not to at least try to live your dream and do something you love. This ethos led me to step away from my career in finance and enrol in cooking school, pursuing my passion.

What has been the toughest part of your culinary journey so far?
Even in 2018, society is still rife with chauvinism and discrimination. Being a minority American female has not made my path to success easy. People make quick assumptions, and the hardest part is to break through perceptions and create opportunities to strive as a female chef.

What’s been your proudest career highlight to date?
My highlight was definitely being chosen to be the Columbia University Commencement speaker for the class of 2018!

You travel a lot for work – do you have a favourite city?
My favourite city has to be my home, New York. It’s the one place on earth I feel I truly belong.

Name us three of your favourite restaurants in London
It’s such a hard choice as London is full of so many inspirational restaurants but Scotts, Tredwells and Providores are definitely up there.

What can guests expect from the menu at Jinjuu?
Jinjuu offers both traditional and contemporary street food. Guests can expect to find the best homemade kimchi and Korean fried chicken in London!

Describe your cooking style in three words
Cosy, comforting and casual.

Ariana Huffington, Dominique Crenn and Tina Fey are all inspirations.

What’s next on the cards?
It’s hard to say… I just like to see where the wind blows me.
